Assistant Professor & Extension Economist

Bidisha Mandal is an Assistant Professor and Health Extension Specialist in the School of Economic Sciences, Washington State University. She holds a PhD in Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics from the Ohio State University. 

Bidisha Mandal’s extension program integrates economic research with applied analysis to address key public health issues and improve health related decision-making throughout the life-cycle. She is partnering with the Nutrition Director of Spokane Public Schools to measure the impact of changing school food environment on the food choices of middle school students. Along with researchers from the College of Nursing, WSU, she is studying the cost-effectiveness of improving transitional care for high risk patients. She is working with researchers from the Food and Drug Administration to examine the effect of maternal work status on infant feeding.   Additional areas of interest include analyzing the consequence of job loss and fear of job loss on mental health and understanding the relationship between obesity and food insecurity.
